Server Virtualisation

Reduce energy and hardware costs while gaining greater control of your infrastructure and enhanced scalability.

What is server virtualisation?

A typical server sits idle for 75-85% of the time. It’s costly and inefficient. But there is a solution...

Server virtualisation transfers the function of a number of individual servers to a number of ‘virtual’ servers hosted on a single physical server.  It cuts energy and hardware costs while giving you improved control of your infrastructure and enhanced scalability. The changeover process is known as physical to virtual conversion.

How does it work?

In a conventional IT setup each application has its own individual server:

  • Exchange Server
  • Domain Controller
  • File Server
  • SQL Server
  • SharePoint Server
  • CRM Server
  • Web Server

Server virtualisation allows you to consolidate individual servers into a single application:

What are the benefits to your business?

Reduced costs

It is estimated that the average server uses just 15-25% of its available capacity. The resulting cost of power, cooling, hardware and maintenance is a wasteful and wholly avoidable drain on your resources.

Server virtualisation enables you to use fewer servers while lowering costs, simplifying operations and reducing the size of your data centre.  By re-configuring multiple systems to run on a small number of virtual servers you reduce upgrade and support costs while conserving maximum power during idle periods.

In operational terms each server behaves exactly as if it were running separately. Nothing changes – except the cost!

Improved performance and smart management of data

Tracking, updating and supporting one virtual server is easier and less labour intensive than maintaining multiple servers.

Server virtualisation utilises the exact amount of data storage you need now, while its scalability allows you to increase, reduce or redeploy storage according to the exact needs of your business.

A virtual environment is easy to set up, manage, upgrade and repair.  While in the event of a server crash it enables fast and reliable disaster recovery. Virtual servers can be instantly and seamlessly switched from one to another in the event of failure or a planned outage.

How can CSE help you change to a virtual environment?

  • Initial site survey and report
  • Detailed migration plan
  • Supply of hardware and integrated management software
  • Expertise to help you make a seamless transition to a virtual environment
  • Support to keep your systems running once the transition has been made

The transition to a virtual environment does not have to happen all at once. With the right initial infrastructure in place, servers can be moved to a virtual server when they are due for renewal or upgrade, and may be optimised to integrate seamlessly into your existing environment.
